У Аляскінській затоці є місце, де води двох водойм зустрічаються у відкритому океані, але не змішуються. Явище відбувається на південно-західному узбережжі Аляски. Це змішання вод Аляскінської затоки з відкритими водами Тихого океану.


Це відбувається тому, що з льодовиків сходить тала свіжа вода і входить в океан. Через різницю в рівні солі і щільності між ними створюється поверхневий натяг, що діє подібно до тонкої стіни, що перешкоджає змішанню океанів.
Кордон окреслений тонким шаром піни. Це явище називається галокліна або шар стрибка солоності – перехідна межа між водами різної солоності. Тут видно чітку межу між водами різної солоності. Щоб утворилися такі галокліни перепад солоності повинен бути приблизно 5-ти кратним. Тобто, вода з одного боку повинна бути солоніша від іншої приблизно в п’ять разів.
