Ґвалтував просто під час прийомів: тисячам пацієнтам гінеколога виплатять компенсацію

Загалом понад 5 тисяч жінок постраждали від сексуального насильства за 35 років роботи лікаря. 

Понад 300 жінок звинуватили Каліфорнійський університет у Лос-Анджелесі (UCLA) у навмисному приховуванні постійного сексуального насильства лікаря-гінеколога Джеймса Хіпса над пацієнтками.

Лікар Джеймс Хіпс працював у студентському оздоровчому центрі університеті 35 років – від 1983 до 2018 року. За словами юристів, він був найбільш високооплачуваним лікарем у всьому Каліфорнійському університеті., тому тисячі жінок, хворих на рак та інші тяжкі захворювання, ішли до нього за допомогою.

Вже в перші роки роботи лікаря почали з’являтися скарги потерпілих пацієнток. Попри це університет не починав розслідування щодо лікаря Хіпса аж до 2017 року. Внаслідок цього, жінки почали подавати позови на навчальний заклад “за навмисне приховування сексуального насильства гінеколога над пацієнтками”.

Справа почала рухатися лише у 2019 році. Тоді суддя призупинив медичну ліцензію Джеймса Хіпса на час розгляду справи, однак той себе винним не визнав.

Тоді університет заявив, що сподівається врегулювати справу методом грошових компенсацій потерпілим.

“Наш перший і найвищий обов’язок – завжди бути на боці громад, яким ми служимо. Ми сподіваємося, що компенсація стане одним із кроків на шляху до переживання цієї історії причетними позивачами”, — заявили в Каліфорнійському університеті.

Так, у липні минулого року федеральний суддя схвалив угоду на суму 73 мільйони доларів проти містера Хіпса, яку подали понад 5,5 тисяч жінок.

Одна з них, Кара Кейгл, яка пережила рак грудей, розповіла, що зазнала сексуального насильства від лікаря ще 8 років тому.

“Тепер, після восьми довгих років, я отримала визнання того, що зі мною сталося”, — зазначила жінка.

Воночас вона наголосила, що її “серце розривається” за всіх жінок, які постраждали після неї, адже університет багато років відмовлявся вживати належних заходів.
